Letters convey meaning. For those who understand them, they are information.
But for those who don’t, they are nothing more than shapes—graphic forms.
In this project, I conducted a series of experiments using three different languages, each with its own writing system.
By stretching the characters, I discovered barcode-like patterns that revealed new visual traits unique to each script.
Latin letters follow a strict rule of uniform x-height. In contrast, kanji and hiragana produce unexpected forms where curves and straight lines intersect.
Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is composed of geometric units that emphasize the counter spaces—the empty forms within.
Paradoxically, distancing these letters from their original legibility allowed me to understand their essence more deeply.
It was in their distortion that their true nature emerged.
